Counselling Next 10 Years:

Counselling is a professional, efficient and credible attempt in molding a confused mind with radically humanistic approach. The counselling profession has changed a great deal over the last decade, and is likely to see more change over the next 10 years. The current complexity of civilization, the rapidity of change in social values and norms and the loss of some traditional religious and familial values are creating new conflicts and anxiety for individuals and society. Some of the changes that will likely occur include:

Attitude toward counselling – The World of today is a high pressure World. This brings a stress in everyday life. The constant change in society is so fast that it makes people restless. Nowadays more new information was produced within very short duration which no one could imagine two decade ago. This has created new challenges and stress that has ability to rob you of your productivity, creativity and effectiveness. Those who could not cope with the rapidity of change would have been suffered for their maladaptive behaviour. At this phase only a good counselor might be helpful in sorted out troubles. There is still some stigma associated with seeking counselling. The next decade is likely to see this reducing further, with greater acceptance and approval of the benefits associated with counselling. As only an experienced, honest and empathetic soul could pacify one who for the time being because of some pertinent reasons is not in normal mood.

Shift in clientele – The baby boom generation is beginning its shift into retirement, which will in turn lead to a shift in clientele for counsellors. The profession is likely to see more clients who are older and dealing with issues related to retirement and aging. Sometimes counseling is an urgent need. There is no harm of attending counseling sessions. In family, members share with each other without apprehending it. Now joint family has been shifted to a nuclear family and young members are busy with their own works. Interaction with members in a family has been reduced and this brings a great emptiness in aged couples.

Research – As counselling gains greater acceptance among the general population, there will be more opportunities to conduct the research necessary to advance professional knowledge. Such research may occur in the academic world, such as colleges and universities, or it may occur in the practising world, thanks to active counsellors and professional associations.
